MY LEARNING FALL AND RISE!
Awakened Ocean
Splish. Splash. Splish. Splash. The sound of the oars hitting the ocean surface was constantly crawling into your ear. You were gliding through the water with ease. You gaze into the beautiful, peaceful, vibrant blue mass, the ocean seemed to be sparkling. The waves were calm. The ocean seemed to be like a sleeping child. You get lost looking into the ecstatic beauty. Unfortunately, that did not last for too long. Thrash! Thrash! Thrash! The waves were crashing against the frail kayak! Quickly, you snapped out of your daze! Your once peaceful ride quickly transformed as the ocean turned angry! You gripped the side of kayak tightly your hand turning white in the process. You felt yourself moving up and down while, coursing through the strong tides. The kayak getting dragged like a rag doll. After, what seemed like forever, it stopped. The waves returned to their once tranquil state. Numerous thoughts and questions filled your mind. However, weirdly everything made sense. That's the way life is. Nothing is ever so easy. So peaceful. So simple. There will always be obstacles one way or another. However, there is always is a happening ending. Cliche. I know. But, bear with me. The scenario above is how I picture my experience in my American literature course.
It all started in August, the normal back to school routine. Woke up in pure sorrow and resentment to move. But somehow manage to get up and get to the hellhole also known as, school. So, here I am at school it was time to go to my fifth period. With all honestly, I walked to class with pure dread as I was quite over the whole welcome back speeches from other teachers. Finally, I reach the classroom. Right of the bat, I knew this class was going to be different. The decor of the room said it all. The walls were so simple yet, carried meaning. I was surprised there was no seating chart somewhere present. Freedom! That is what popped into my head. I indubitably loathe seating charts. Oh, and the desks! They were no islands or groups! The desks were scattered in a "U" shape almost like a seminar. Typically, I hate grouped desks because I feel the teacher is trying to order us around like animals more than actual human beings. I take a seat at random. My eyes still scattering around the room. Landing on the my new teaches. He was sitting at his desk never looking away from the computer screen almost like he was in a trance. At last, the bell rang. Immediately, my teacher springs from his seat seeming extremely enthusiastic.
In terms of first impressions, this particular teacher made a great one! He spoke to us as people. Like, actual people. Not like that standardized teacher to student talk like an authority figure. No, he was different. His choice of words and syntax played well in expressing his character and personality. Although, I was aware that this course would not be like any course I've taken before nothing prepared me for what came next. My teacher began to explain he wanted us students to decide how this course would be taught. And yes, us students! He gave us students the option to choose! Crazy! Right? Before, making our decision my teacher made sure we knew both our options in depth. One option, was to follow the infamous teaching technique that abides by the textbook like a bible. This option seemed to very vague and too familiar. In contrast, the second option was to use open-source learning. This was new to me. I had never heard of this teaching method. But, my teacher was successful explaining how it a type of learning where there is no structure. It was a diverse way to express ideas and read several sources where we can reel express ur views/opinions freely while, gaining knowledge at the same time. After explaining the options, my teacher exited the room to let us students come together and make a decisions. My classmates and I look at one another dumbfounded. I make eye contact with a close friend of mine and we give each other this knowingly nob. We both stand up and ask the class whose in favor of each option as expected, we all chose open- source learning! That decision changed it all!
Nowadays, in school students are under this control feel vibe of authority always have the upperhand but, what I experienced in that class was nothing like the usual classes. The opening line in Charles Bukowski's poem, The Laughing Heart, couldn't have said it any better, "your life is your life don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission. be on the watch. there are ways out". The option of open source learning was y way out of the normal boring teaching style.
Next, after the decision making. We started right away. The first thing presented was our journal entries. An journal entry was where my teacher would provide a prompt and us students would write half a page about in our personal journal. At first, I thought I was going to hate these because I thought the prompts were going to be those cliche school topics. But, thank goodness they weren't. The prompts forced me as a student to look deep within myself and my memory to write these passionate short passages which I enjoyed greatly. For example, my favorite best journal entry was my very first one! The first prompt was to explain the most memorable moment from class the day before (first day of school). I wrote a full page about how I felt freed from the shuckles the school has put on students today. My mind was free and just so focused. In simple terms, I was in a state of mindfulness that created a nice journal entry filled with insight which I never knew I could do before. All in all, the journal entries our significantly demanding but, once you get the hang of the routine the ease starts to pour in.
Secondly, the blogs. Yes! Blogs! The first week of school, we were focused on creating and getting our blogs up and running. Our blogs are a clear representation of our work in the course. In the beginning, it was challenging to learn how to work the blog. There were so many buttons and things you can do with the blog. It was quite confusing. However, once I figured it out it was smooth sailing. I feel that once I personalized my blog I knew it was gonna be a great platform for my thoughts and ideas. And I was right! Going into specifics, on our blogs we make posts about what we are currently learning and or discussing about in the course. So, our blogs are pretty unpredictable. For the reason, that at times we might just have the urge to put our thoughts into words and boom! A post is born! This brings me to the creation of one of my favorite blog posts! Around October, there was this request to write a short story about any moment in our life we were to entitle it, Story of my Life. This made me unbelievably happy! Literally, I was grinning ear to ear even my cheeks started to hurt. I have always loved writing short stories but, never got the opportunity to write one for a class and if I did I didn't have the freedom to write about anything I wanted to. But, now I did and it made me write freely with my thoughts running wild. I chose to write about a very influential moment in life. Therefore, my story in the post was amazing in my eyes at least. it was simply crazy to see how I could turn a moment in my life into this small story where people can experience what I felt with me. To add on, we were also required to memorize poems! And get this we had to record ourselves reciting them from memory then post the video on our blogs! This was hard to do but, what you learn from the poems is worth it in the end. In simple terms, the blog was an obstacle but, I loved the results of this obstacle.
As I continued the course, I faced the biggest fork in the road! Who knew something that seems so simple would be the hardest thing for me to do. As a writer, thanks to the beautiful school system of today, I was wired/programmed to write a standard five paragraph essay. It was like an automatic instinct I was so used to. I was so used to it, that I could write one in 35 minutes tops. Keeping that in mind, we had just finished reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story, Young Goodman Brown, we asked to write an essay. But, not any typical essay. My teacher asked to me to just try. Try to break out of the five paragraph essay. To make our writing more emotional and less structured. In other words, he wanted to see the passion in our writing. So, I tried like he asked. But, as I looked at my essay. It was only slightly different from my normal five paragraph essays. So, I felt disheartened. But, I knew I would have another chance to try again. My second chance came around once we were introduced to the poem, A Dream Within a Dream, by Edgar Allan Poe. So, here comes the second essay there was improvement but, not what I wanted. Third chance, The Pedestrian, by Ray Bradbury, closer but not quite there yet. The story revolved around how technology has sucked the humanity out of people and I feared that it had happened to me because couldn't put my passion in my essays. I knew I was missing something. Something that needed to open my passion. Finally, my prayers were answered when I we read Emerson's essay, On Self-Reliance, this essay is just amazing. It influenced me greatly as a person and a writer! The text taught me many things. Like, to not look outside yourself. And that when someone says something original it immediately catches attention and or sparks emotion. Furthermore, the text explores that arrogance is when you believe what you put out there is genius. Now, the thought alone is not genius what genius is the belief putting your knowledge out there without the fear of judgement. We have this hidden voice and it will be the universal sense once heard. When we don't bind ourselves to the books we create our own thoughts/opinions. In addition, it is worth celebrating when having a contradicting opinion against most because how can you be yourself and pretend to be someone you're not. After, reading this text we wrote an essay. At last, I was happy with my writing. It was just me and my pen. My thoughts were just flowing into the paper. I was extremely happy with the end result of that essay.
In terms of continuity, after that huge fork in the road expressed above. The class just seemed to flow like a lazy river. My journal entries were always easy to write without any hesitation. My journal entries were always completed on time and I felt were very insightful. In addition, my blog was always up to date with each post being posted with the requested time. I felt like I finally got into the perfect routine that made me successful in the course.
When I first started in this course, as writer I was unoriginal. I wrote like every typical high school student that took honors english the years before. I used the five paragraph structure. My writing carried that unreal emotion. Or in other terms "fake" passion. Now, thanks to open-source learning I was able to gain the knowledge of understanding what the purpose of writing really is. The purpose of writing is to make ourselves understood. That is it. The big secret of writing. Knowing that, I feel that my writing has enhanced. Simply, looking at this essay I can see and feel my improvement. As I typing on the other side of this screen, I have a smile on my face just from simply writing this essay. In Robert Frost's poem, The Road Not Taken, he says, "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference", and I did exactly that. I had to options and I chose what many people do not practice, open-source learning. It has impacted me significantly. So, the next time you are in the position of making a decision really weigh in both options and be brave you won't regret it. I know I don't.

MY BRAIN ON THANKSGIVING BREAK!
Sweet Success!
Thanksgiving break. In my view, was nowhere near a break. But, I was still happy and ecstatic throughout it. To start off, I had two practice on monday, tuesday, and friday for my sport. However, don't be fooled the missing days of the week was still packed with work to do. On Wednesday, I had to work a dua for the boy's wrestling team. On Thursday, I woke up early to help my mom prepare the dinner for the special occasion. Then, on Saturday, I had to work a boy's novice tournament which was extremely boring but, something happened that day that really impacted me which we'll discuss later about! Sunday. Poor Sunday! All the work for my other classes hit me like a tsunami. But, we are not talking about my other curses. However, despite all the commotion occurring for my sport and other classes I somehow managed to be productive for my english class. In regards to this english literature course, I can confidently say I was significantly successful in completing the, "list of living well", discussed the day before break. For one, my portfolio was edited to perfection! Secondly, I revised my best blog posts. Thirdly, I emailed six individuals to be my potential mentors for y big question! Fourthly, I studied for the vocabulary final coming up soon! Yay! Now, my blog has always been up to date (please sense my brag). Finally, I checked for updates and tips from the blog although, they came in late they still were helpful for me. Despite, the week being hectic I still had moments to hangout with y friends on our friendsgiving event and spent time with my family and eat! Which Note is rare for a wrestler! As a result, completed the last point on the list. So, sweet success for this class for me!Tuesday, November 26, 2019
Literature Analysis #3: The Giver
“Perhaps it was only an echo”....
Plot:
The utopian novel, written by Lois Lowry, titled, The Giver, revolves around a about a boy named Jonas who lives in a futuristic society which has tried to relieve its citizens of choices to ensure sameness, fairness, and equality. In this “society”, every December they hold a ceremony where each child moves up a year in school and receives special privileges. Now, Jonas is eleven so he will have his future job assigned to him. The day of the ceremony arrives and the students sit in their birth order for that year; fifty children are born each year through birthmothers, which is a job in their society. Jonas is number nineteen, but when it comes time for his turn, the elders skip him. At the end the Chief Elder comes forward and apologizes to the community for making them feel uncomfortable. Then, she explains that Jonas has been selected as the new Receiver of Memory. Jonas goes home with a list of rules for this new position, of which he was completely unaware. Next, Jonas meets the current recover of me worries and he develops his ability to see beyond when the Giver transmits colors to him. Unfortunately, the Giver also has to pass along painful memories, such as injuries, starvation, and war. Jonas has never experienced these typical normal emotions. Jonas and the Giver both know that the society must change back to a normal real emotion filled world. So, they come up with a plan to help the community and to free Jonas. Jonas will escape and as he leaves, his memories will be set free into society. The Giver will then help the community work through those feelings and show them the value of things that they have taken away, such as marriage and extended families. And at last, the sorcery is restored to be normal but, Jonas no longer resides in that society. Actually, it’s never revealed where Jonas and his companion Gabriel live and or expedite after the incredible climax.
It has been shown that there are several themes that can be inferred in the novel. But, in my view I can break it down to two overall themes. Firstly, I see individuality and freedom of choice. As Jonas was the odd one out in his society and he believed that Elwood should not follow the structured “fake” society. Secondly, I feel more connected to this theme, which is the significance of human emotion. If the reader deeply analyzed the novel they will be able to see how bland and almost ark the society is without emotion. There is no love, joy, fear, or pain. The society is shown to be filled with these robot like figures of human beings but, Jonas and the Giver allows to see the need for emotion and feelings.

VINCENT WILLEM VAN GOGH!
A Man Born in the Wrong Time...
Now, we all know Vincent Van Gogh. Unless, you've been living under a rock your whole life. He is mostly known for his ianting like, the Starry Night or the Bedroom at Arles. When e was alive, he lived life unknown by people and remained poor his whole life. This man lived a hard tormented life as it is. Not only was he the outsider in his village he suffered mental illness, depression. No one had even given him the time of day to merely take a glance at his artwork. He only have sold a couple works here and there. But, through all these hardships he was able to turn the pain of his tormented into erotic beauty of landscapes through his paintings. Pain is easy to depict but to use that pain to crete joy filled picture of our world is simply mesmerizing. If only the people in his time had given Van Gogh the chance and or moment to explain his artwork he would've be recognized much sooner. He would've proven himself to be great as he did prove in the future. The man lost the battle to depression and took his life. What a waste of pure talent and personality. It is safe to say that this man was born in the wrong time.
FLORAL DESIGN WITH HEALTHY MINDSETS!
The Two Positive Boys...
In my school, there is a class offered called, floral design. Now, it is a very popular class on campus as it counts as a a fulfilling requirement in the a-g requirements. But, what is mainly known about the class is it usually pure girls in the classroom. It is simply rare to have boys in the class. And or even boys who actually want to try in the course alone. I am one of the many girls in a floral design class. Luckily, in my class there are two boys. And yes they actually participate! This week we have manly focused on creating flower crowns. And the boys. The boys arrangements let's just say weren't the best but that didn't matter they had fun! Although, they knew there crowns were the best n the world their positive mindset allowed them to embrace their creation and find humor and happiness in it. As we took a group photo while, wearing our crowns the two boys had the biggest smiles out of us all. I loved their attitude! I believe today I learned that having a good mindset can help us greatly. All in all, boys can make flower crowns too!
WRESTING SEASON IS HERE!
Let the Journey Begin...
I cannot be more excited and or more terrified! Finally, wrestling season has begun. Today, is my first match of the season. Although, it is only a scrimmage with another team close by. I can't help but still have those butterflies fluttering around my stomach. My hands are sweating. And my mind. My poor mind is like tsunami as the waves of thoughts consisting of worry, stress, and fear are thrashing around. Through all this stress and fear I can't help but also, feel excited that what I've been training for a year is finally here. All the soreness of my body and endless workouts are finally gonna be worth it. As for my opponent, today she is a challenge. I have not beaten her since m freshman year I am now a junior. I am confident in myself and my technique as well as my strength. Hopefully, that will be enough. Thanks, for being a part of my vent secession.

"Self-Reliance"...Part 5!
Notes:
- Prayer that craves a particular commodity, — anything less than all good, — is vicious.
- "His hidden meaning lies in our endeavours; Our valors are our best gods."
- Religion could benefit from self-reliance : Petty to benevolent wish for the common good. Religion's main fear is its fear of individual creativity
- Culture devalues INDIVIDUALISM!
- "It is for want of self-culture that the superstition of Travelling, whose idols are Italy, England, Egypt, retains its fascination for all educated Americans"
- Urge to travel is a symptom of our educational system because they teach us only to imitate and want to travel to see others art rather than creating it ourselves
- "But the rage of travelling is a symptom of a deeper unsoundness affecting the whole intellectual action"
- "All men plume themselves on the improvement of society, and no man improves. Society never advances. It recedes as fast on one side as it gains on the other. It undergoes continual changes; it is barbarous, it is civilized, it is christianized, it is rich, it is scientific; but this change is not amelioration. For every thing that is given, something is taken"
- " Society acquires new arts, and loses old instincts."
- "Society is a wave. The wave moves onward, but the water of which it is composed does not. The same particle does not rise from the valley to the ridge. Its unity is only phenomenal. The persons who make up a nation to-day, next year die, and their experience with them".
- "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles".
- Self reliance then, is the triumph of a principal
- Emerson urges to be a RISK TAKER whether good or bad place or time→IT WILL CHANGE ONE"S SELF-REGARD!

"Self-Reliance"...Part 4!
Notes:
- Consistency is a virtue- Emerson thinks this isn't necessarily true: why?
- When we learn about new things wy should we keep our head down and turned backwards: Agreeable but arguable!
- If you get a better idea grab that--- be open to a good idea: YES!
- "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds"
- Is it so bad to be misunderstood? -----"To be great is to be understood": Agee. Ex. Copernicus center of the solar system
- Have your ideas if you're misunderstood so what!
- Yeah, you might decide to do or say different things day to day nut you still are apart of a different world or group
- "Men imagine that they communicate their virtue or vice only by overt actions, and do not see that virtue or vice emit a breath every moment"--We do things that make our character without thinking about it
- 🚢 ----People end to be themselves
- Your CONFORMITY EXPLAINS NOTHING!
- "Honor is admirable to us because it is no ephemeris. t is always an ancient virtue. We worship it to-day because it is not of to-day. We love it and pay homage because it is not a trap for our love and homage, but is self-dependent, self-derived, and therefore of an old immaculate pedigree, even if shown in a young person"
- What Kind of ripple effect do I/You have?
- IMPRESSIONS ARE MADE EVERYDAY!

TODAY'S ARGUMENT!
In the Making...
Today, I pursued an argument with my fellow peers. The topic was about the discrimination against arabs or always referred to as "muslims", due to the terrorist attacks that are present and occurred in the past. I argued that they are in fact attacked and racially profiled. While, my peer argued that the problem is not really present now. I used logos to explain my point of view. Obviously, I brought up 9/11 to discuss. Since, that tragedy the racial profiling ignited rapidly. Nowadays, in some cases whenever arabs walk down the street or enter stores people avoid their gaze and most of time yell out racial slurs. I backed this up with a recent study I read about in my history course. All in all, the argument was entertaining and insightful. I have gained a lot of new perspectives in that topic. But, most of all I figured out how to efficiently used logo to defend my thoughts and or opinions.
"On Self-Reliance"...Part 3!
Notes:
- "Nothing is at last but the integrity of your own mind"
- Emerson has a deep seated belief that people are GOOD
- Everything
- Malice= Bad action
- Don't act like you're good if you're not actually good
- Listen when something good then praise when its not DON'T it loses value!
- Not against charity or genoriost but is against doing it solely to make your presence "look" good →DON'T FAKE IT!
- Virtues= Honorable to mention
- People doing bad things is more common than doing good things
- Sometime people are not very nice but they do a good deed to "make up" for it
- I do NOT need praise from others
- It's easier to be at peace of mind without thoughts in solitude than being stuck in crowd with contradicting thoughts/opinions
- Attorney→"defenders of the truth"→at times have to lie!
- People start speaking like mouthpieces for other people→People start to not say NO!
- We look at people's reactions to us= hurts us→the people around us provide us w/ inspiration
- When arguing with one person both people are questioning why they do not "fit in" with each other
- The GAME is BIGGER than the PLAYER→arguments

"On Self-Reliance"...Part 2!
Notes:
- Soliloquy: If you choose not to decide, you still had made a choice-You don't know what you can do until you do your best.-You can't show your best, if you never try your best.
- "I'm so stressed"→Relaxation , which then stressesus MORE!
- We feel are bes, when we put our heart into it and we acknowledge it.
- Emerson talks about teenagers→sometimes they don't care
⇝Teenagers do not care what they do not care about. And they might let you know.
⇝Ex: A baby does not care when it's hungry, adults drop what they are doing, and adults have to compromise. BAbies and rude people do not have a filter, should teacher us what is or that is okay. An adult is trapped by its conscious, we are alway aware how others see us and our voices become faint and fainter.
- CHALLENGE: A World.
RHETORICAL STRATEGIES PART 1!
Discussion:
- Ethos: Credibility....Pathos: Emotional appeal....Logos: Logic/Reasoning...Kairos: Opportune moment
- Ethos Examples:
- The Author, Johannes is a philosopher who works with engineers "Stanford's Center for Automotive Research". (Self-Driving Cars Article).
- Diana Divecha -Creditiable because she has a phD in psychology and she's an assistant clinical professor at Yale Child Study Center and Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence which makes her credible to talk about bullying
- Pathos Examples:
- Diana Divecha: "School with a positive climate faster healthy development, while negative school climate is associated with higher rates of student bullying, aggression, victimization, and feeling unsafe."
- Diana Divecha: "A minority as teachers report that they feel unprepared to deal with classroom bullying. Some teachers bully students themselves, or show a lack of empathy towards children who are bullied."
- Diana Divecha: "Do leaders understand that uninterrupted severe bullying can confer lifelong negative consequences on targets of bullies, bullies, and witnesses?"
- Diana Divecha: "For example, preschoolers are expelled from school at the highest rate of all, but the neurological hardware for their self-control os only just developing."
- Logos Examples:
- A study of 3t- first graders showed that when teachers were more emotionally supportive of students, children were less aggressive and had greater behavioral self- control, compared to the use of behavior management which did not improve student self- control. (Divecha, Proveit Bullying).
- Kairos Examples:
- "So a school's specific issues can be addressed, and the flavor of local cultures retained. School climate assessments can be completed periodically to track the impact of improvements." -Diana Divecha.

"On Self-Reliance"....
Genius!
Mixture Notes:Actions speak louder than words. Our actions define ourselves. Don't look outside yourself. nature is primal, life goes deeper than thought. Emerson is saying this more ancient than latin and primina. eminent means well known and respected . When someone says something you hear or see something original it immediately catches your attention and or sparks emotion. Arrogance what I put out there is genius. The thought itself is not genius what genius is the belief putting your knowledge out there without the fear of judgement. We have this hidden voice and it will be the universal sense. Did Not bind themselves to the books broke out of it created their own thoughts and or options. Worth celebrating have a contradicting opinion against most. How can you be yourself and pretend to be someone else. If that someone else succeeds "yourself" dies. YOU.Once again, my mind was captured into a text or more specifically, an essay. Now, my attention and mindfulness was captured almost instantly. Due to a phrase, "Ne te quaesiveris extra", which means do not seek outside yourself, look within. As you can probably tell, I had to look up this quote to see its translation and that action itself already caught my interest in this essay. Emerson's introduction is small but captive. First, with that quote and then follows a small passage about how nature is primal and what to come next is more ancient than latin itself and goes deeper than thought. As I began to read further, Emerson's ideology of our personalities and or who we choose to become is simply fascinating and relatable! In gist, originality is genius! When we hear something original we immediately out engulf it to rather hate it or love it. In other words, it instantly sparks emotion. Furthermore, Emerson was expressing such intelligence when he made sure to show he is not to be misunderstood when he talked about putting your work and or opinions out there: the thought itself is not genius what is genius is the belief in yourself of putting your knowledge out there despite the fear of judgement.

ANCIENT RHETORIC IN MODERN TIMES!
Always present.
Four words. Ethos, pathos, logos, and the forgotten gem, kairos. For numerous years, we have been using these components to create and or conduct a persuasive argument. Whether we like it or not these factors are seen in many sources or texts today. For example, in an article entitled, The Ethical Challenges Self-Driving Cars Will See Every Day, written by Johannes Himmelreich. The usage of ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos created argument. Although, it is not clearly seen at times. Therefore, I am here to clear your vision.
In terms of ethos, we can see this right in the beginning of the article. In the title, the word "ethical" is presented which reveals how the author knows how to analyze the topic deeply, and further into the article the authors uses the word "ethics" consistently which strengthens his creditiablity in the topic of self-driving cars greatly. To add on, there is an obvious example of ethos in the text, which is when the author mentions he is a philosopher that works around engineers at Stanford's Center for Automobile Research. This explicitly shows the author is credible source to discuss the topic expressed in the title. It as if he is showing his titles and degrees on his walls to us the readers through mentioning a few words. So, we can see the author is qualified to discuss this topic.
Moving to logos, Himmelreich presents a clear line of reasoning. One being that it is easy for humans hard for machines to analyze most humane situations. To deepen, his reasoning he provides the example of people crossing the street and an philosophical question to about a cart that established a deeper understanding to his argument. Another, line of reasoning was the changes to driving behavior. This statement is connected to his view that people have various driving behaviors good and bad, mostly bad. To strengthen this he brings up a research experiment in Portland which showed colored people waited longer to cross the intersection than white people. This helped show what the author was trying to reveal. In gist, the author was showing a perfect example of logos in his writing.
As for Pathos, keyword emotion or emotional appeal to readers (sympathy almost). Although, there were many moment of emotional pieces thre twoexampleswhereI felt it peronall the most. For one, the usage of a picture it was able to clearly represent is argument about technology versus humans and it was relatable, which sparked the emotion for me at least. Secondly, mundane ethics presented in one of the articles paragraphs. Here the writer uses presented characteristics of situations that occurred with driers. One of them being children and people getting hit and or run over. I mean how could you not feel the emotion at the mention of this. I have no words to explain I feel it is self explanatory.
Finally, Kairos. The most opportune moment to present something. The writer did this "timing"thing perfectly. For one his introduction topic was not too demanding and or shocking it was more like building u to his main argument without scaring off the reader. Like, when he put in the mundane ethics portion of the text. It was in the middle and or close to the end of the text. It was able to give a strong effect because it was like here's a lot of statistical information and then, boom! Emotion! It played really nicely which helped the article move well.
In conclusion, the usage of the four ingredients in a persuasive argument is seen in everydays books, novels, articles, ect. , and the article discussed above is a great example.

ANATOMY OF A PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT!
This is how it's Done!
Tonight, I decided to conduct a persuasive argument. To keep it short, I wanted a new electric guitar to add to my collection. My parents said no. However, I am very stubborn. Therefore, with the use of ethos, pathos, and logos I began my persuasive lecture. First, I simply gathered my parents in the living room. Then, I began to list my "credentials". (my ethos). I am a scholar athlete, I've received many responsibility awards as a child. Therefore, I am credited to be able to present this argument. And began to list the good have been doing. For example, my grades, chores being done, ect.. To let them know my lines of reasoning (logos). Finally, the emotional appeal I reflected on how I felt I have loss touch with my musical side of my personality. For the reason, I was bombarded with homework and practice never having time to release my creativity. So, this component of pathos convinced my parents to get me my new guitar. Oh, and for kairos simply look at the way I organized the argument.
FOOD FOR THOUGHTS #7!
Ethos, Pathos, Logos, Kairos...
- Ethos= Ethical Appeal of Writer
- Logos= Logic
- Pathos=Emotion
- Kairos= The opportune time/ and or place
- All three of these components are ingredients into creating a persuasive argument

LET ME WALK YOU THROUGH THE PEDESTRIAN!
Beyond Just a Stroll Down the Street
GPS. We all are familiar with this device. Imagine you have just purchased a new one for your car. ow, it worked perfectly the first few months but, it started to show some defects over. As you would end up miles away from your preferred destination. Frustrated, youdecide to turn return back home. But, the route given in miles and miles away from your house. Any normal person would throw out this system right? It's a huge distraction and inconvenience from what is important. Although, you threw out this device. You still are distracted and held back from opportunities everyday. Phones. Computers. Televisions. Tablets. These are just a few technological devices that have seemed to absorb the attention of society today. This ideology is explored in Ray Bradbury's short story, The Pedestrian, published in the 1950's. This short story was inspired by Bradbury's experience of being stop by the police simply or walking. Walking down the street. As a result, the author went home and wrote a story that expressed his feelings towards humanity, technology, authority. In terms of technology, Bradbury believes humanity is being sucked away by technology absorbing all of people's' attention. Therefore, the author feels the world is distracted or blinded by technology that they fail to see how authority is impacting the world. The author was able to successfully create this sense of opinion with ease.
The plot was the most clear contributor to the feelings displayed by the author mentioned above. As the plots beings with the protagonist embarking on one of his daily night walks, it begins with a strongly descriptive setting. In the city , one cool November night. Then, the main character, Leonard Mead is broken out of his walking routine. The man is disrupted by a futuristic "police" car, as the story takes place in 2053 A.D.. Next, Mead is simply picked up by the car and driven away from the sidewalk he was standing on before. Then, the story concludes. Without a considerable amount of analysis, the story seems to be confusing and or hard take in. But, the plot serves as a significant contributor was looked into deeper. Such as, the opening seen the streets were empty isolated, it was only eight o' clock. And in a city? There is an obvious change in this time period. This change is explained where the plot reveals the only "light" in the dark dim street were the bluish blurs coming from people's home windows. Televisions. This shows how how the t.v., technology is capturing/absorbing the people's utmost attention keeping them away from the outside world. Therefore, as Mead is stopped by the police car no one is there to see it and or hear it. So, it is revealed or proven that know one is there to see authority at upon an individual.
There are several other examples that reveal the author's opinion however, these are the main points.
Now, there is Bradbury's tone. Throughout the story, there a couple of different tones here and there but the main one of all is the tone of loneliness. The sense of this tone is clearly shown once again the introduction of the story the author uses words like "silence" and "empty"to describe the city on Mead's walk. This is revealing ow Mead is lonesome individual who is expressed to be different from all the others in his own little lonesome world. In addition, there is the author's word choice of "metallic voice" when describing the police officer. Although, this is more like diction the tone of annoyance almost frustration is revealed when the voice of the "policeman" is revealed. Now, I say "policeman" because the there is no human in the police car at all it is simply an program in the vehicle which furthers the idea that technology is replacing and or taking human interaction, taking away humanity.
Overall, the tone helped to understand the author's feelings towards technology.
Character, or more specifically Leonard Mead. The protagonist is described to be the outcast in the city. For the reason, that he does not give in to this new wave of technology that ha come over his generation. The character's distinction from the current society is seen many times that was significant representing the author's emotions/opinions. Like, when Mead was stopped by the police he is asked what his profession was. He replied, I guess you can I'm a writer. To which the policeman replies no profession at all. This reveals how writers and authors were wiped away/forgotten about as the years have gone by with new modes of technology. In other words, technology took over the old traditional human creativity and or humanity in jobs. Next, Mead is asked another question. This time it is if he is married. Leonard replies with ano, further saying that no one wants to be with him. This is showing how Mead's preference to not in touch with technology made his isolated from society and people as they only care to put their attention towards technology. Also, it is shown that Mead's house is the only house that is bright in contrast to the blue gloomy homes and as Mead is driven away from his he sees his house slowly disappear. This component of the character is expressing how Mead is the last bit of humanity in the technology consumed society but, as he is driven away it is signifying that the last bit of humanity has left the dreadful city. Overall, the character played a key role is displaying Bradbury's opinions.
As this story was resulted from an experience with an interaction between the author and the police or I would say authority figure. I envision Bradbury annoyed, frustrated, and simply ticked off. However, Bradbury was able to put his opinions/perspectives into a words creating this influential story in a creative way using tone, character, and plot is his writing. Also, we just must acknowledge how it is crazy to think the author predicted the outcome of technology that is seen today. And let's be clear was pretty spot on in his prediction. All in all, it is evident that Ray believes technology to be an enemy to human connection and interaction. So, the you might want to consider placing your phone down every once in a while, you may see things you never knew were there before.

SO THIS GUY GOES FOR A WALK.
The Reason Behind it all...
Today, I read another story. A short story to be exact entitled, The Pedestrian, written by Ray Bradbury. This story was created based of experience the author had, which was he was pulled over simply for walking in the night. This small encounter sparked the author to write this extraordinary story that was able to convey the author's feelings towards technology, authority, and humanity. In gist, Ray believes technology will takeover our lives deriving our attention that will distract us from authority figures doings. As for humanity, Bradbury thinks it will be sucked away due to technology. He uses plot, tone, and character to display these feelings in the text. Now, in the plot the text begins with a strongly descriptive setting. In the city , cool November night. The main character, Leonard Mead embarking on his usual nightly walks. The man is disrupted by a futuristic "police" car, as the story takes place in 2053 A.D.. Next, Mead is simply picked up by the car and driven away from the sidewalk he was standing on before. Then, the story concludes. Although, the plot is confusing and simple it carries a deeper meaning as you closer to the details. While, the character is walking the street it is completely empty. The people are all inside cooped up watching t.v.; here we see technology begging to com into play as a distraction and or consumption. In the plot, there are details of pale color no bright colors that signify the presence of life. Then, there is tone where the author's tone is to be seen as a sense of loneliness and or outsider feel. As the protagonist, is the only person left in the city that craves human interaction and life beyond technology therefore, contributing to the emotions expressed above. Finally, character, or more specifically, Leonard Mead was shown to be a unique person that no one cared to be associated with due,to his preference of old traditional ways like walking and communication with people. As a result, this helped show the author's feelings about technology. In the end, the author wrote in a way that was able to convey his feelings about technology connected with humanity and authority.
STORY OF MY LIFE!
Leave it All on the Mat
Beep! Beep! Beep! The continuous sound of the phone's alarm loudly echoed in her ear. Finally, after moments of procrastination she silenced the alarm. She looked towards the blur of the screen. 4:45 am, read the screen. Groggily, the girl dragged herself out of bed and grabbed her gym bag she had packed the night before. Before, she proceeded to to make her way down the stairs she awoke her mother. After, some times had passed she enters the car feeling the cool breeze hit her skin. As she was driven down the lonely streets in the dark she could not get rid if this sense of nervousness. Perhaps, it will disappear later. At last, she reaches her destination. She gets out of the car.
"Bye mom", the girl says vaguely.
"Bye Destiny, good luck!" her mom answers.
Destiny then continues her way to white lone van in the high school parking lot. Next, she places her gym bag in the back of the van and aboards it.
"Morning, Garcia!", exclaimed the coach.
"Morning", she replied with sound of tiredness evident in her voice.
The vibe of the van was so negative. You would think a team going to a master's level tournament would have a positive upbeat vibe. But, no not this teams. It was like you could hear the hearts of several wrestlers pounding. The feeling of anxiety and or fear was obvious in the van. You could almost taste it. Destiny makes her way to her designated seat that she always finds comfort in.The girl's poor heart was beating furiously like a beat on the drums. She tried to find ways to distract herself. However, nothing worked. Her mouth dry craving water. Her body weak from cutting weight quickly for the tournament. And above it all hunger was not an additional help what so ever. After, what seem to be the longest tortuous ride, it finally came to end. The team exited the van making their way into the high school's gym. Destiny feeling the mist hit her face cringed her face. Destiny find a spot of the bleachers and let sleep engulf her body.
"Good Morning! All wrestlers weigh ins will begin in five minutes!", the lady's voice boomed throughout the gym.
Destiny and her teammates waited in line to get weighed in. Everyone mde weight. Step one complete. Weigh ins were over which meant time for food. And water! even, after Destiny's thirst was replenished and her stomach was no longer growling. The feel of anxiety never once went way. Not even for one second. Several hours pass by, but do Destiny it felt like minutes.
"121's to staging!", the announcer called into the microphone.
Destiny's heart dropped but, in surprise her feet made her way to the entrance to the mats. She won her first match. The feeling of relief was present. Actually, a little bit of confidence followed as well. She won her second match. Then, her third. But, her fourth match, which was semi-final match to be exact, had quite different result. She had lost. But, it was not the end of her journey she would just have to win er next match to qualify for the state's tournament the following week. Shaking off the previous loss, Destiny prepared for her next match. After a longing for the the match to come, it finally arrived. It felt as if a spotlight was on this match in particular. As everyone seemed to be fixated on the Destiny's match craving to see the result. As Destiny, was the last of her teammates left in the tournament they all surrounded the barricade in anticipation to see her pull through and take another victory. Destiny made her way to the center of the mat placing her foot right on the white, thich, solid line.
"Alright, best of luck to you both", the referee stated enthusiasm, as an attempt to relieve the tension.
Destiny eyes were filled with pure determination and concentration which matched her opponents as equally. The match had begun. Round one, 8-9, Destiny was in the lead. Round two, 15-16, Destiny still in the lead. Anyone who was present will tell you these girls were neck to neck scoring on each other back to back. Round three, this round changed everything.
"Destiny! Shoot!", her coach screamed.
Destiny scored a takedown putting her back in the lead, 16-17. Destiny kept control of the match for the majority of remainder of the match. Her teammates and coaches urging her on. Tens seconds left into match. Destiny could feel the victory already. Five seconds left. Destiny's opponent continuously attempted to escape her Destiny's grasp. Only achieving so at the very last second of the match. Everyone was silent. The breaths of the crowd were sucked in all at once almost in sync. Destiny was confused until, she looked over to the scoreboard. It read 18-17. Destiny's breath hitched. She felt waves of emotion but, could not seem to act upon them. She could hear the yells of her coaches contradicting the referee's call. She even heard other coaches watching trying to defend her as well. But, C.I.F. rule at a master's level no call could be overturned if the match had already concluded. At last, the referee raised her opponents arm in the air. The cheers of the crowd erupted from the people who favored Destiny's opponent. Although, loud, the screams were faint in Destiny's ears. She could not feel anything. All her time and dedication given all gone to waste. All the hours of practice. All the blood bled. All the sweat dripping down her face. Done for what felt for nothing at all. She wanted to scream. To cry. To yell at the top of her lungs. But, nothing came out. She didn't even feel the referee grab her hand.
"Hey, I am truly, genuinely sorry for that call", the referee spoke with a hint of guilt in his voice.
Destiny simply ripped her hand away and made her way away from the mat or the place where all her dreams were shattered and splattered across, exiting the out of the gym. Destiny could already feel the lump in her throat form, about to let out a long awaited sob but, she held it in as she heard her coach scream her name.
"Am I not here to pity you or makes matters worse I just you want to listen", her coach explained.
Destiny with her back facing him simply nods. As she didn't want him to see her cry. She saw it as vulnerability which she hated. As the captain, she is supposed to the strong one out of the group. So, she felt crying would defeat the purpose. Although, prepared for the worse. Nothing could've prepared Destiny for what she heard next.
"You got what you earned. You get what you earn. You think you might've been the hardest working person in the room. You think you might've done everything right. But, you get what you earned, figure it out. If you don't want it to happen again. Don't let it happen again. Figure it out", her Coach expressed then simply walked back into the gym.
Destiny lost for words and or feelings just sits back against the brick wall trying to piece everything together. She was like this all the way back home. For the next few days, and weeks. She took a break from wrestling, Trying to avoid wrestling at any means necessary. But, one night she recalled the words her coach spoke. And finally got the purpose of it all. At last, she returned to practice. No words spoken. She simply turned to her coach, who gave her knowing smirk. From that point on, Destiny had a drive to make a comeback, if to put it simple terms. She is now ready for any obstacles to be thrown her way for the upcoming season. Perhaps, this time around she will get what she truly earns.

THE ART OF HOSTING GOOD CONVERSATIONS ONLINE!
Online Communication!
Now, we all know how to communicate: understanding , rhetorics, persuasion,. Right? I talk to you you reply. Boom! Done! Communication! Technically yes, overall no. Communication goes beyond that simple interaction. Anyhow, do you know how to host a conversation in general? Online? This answers to these questions are answered in Howard Rheingold's article, The Art of Hosting Good Conversations online. At first, the author introduces what a good conversations consists of. Such as, being kind to one another, feeling the conversation to the core(start to finish), and the goal to better/improve someone's or your own knowledge and or understanding of a certain subject. Next, Rheingold gives us the ingredients to make a good conversation online. Like, allow people to contact one another, talk about a topic that could be discussed by a large, and most importantly mke newcomers feel welcome and people's opinions and or answers valued. These simple steps will make a good online conversation as it is intended to do so. Finally, Howards goes into depth of what a host is and their responsibilities/behavior followed. In Rheingold's view, a host is the creator of the "party" and faciate the conversations. Regarding their duties, they must set a good example and or model for their party. So, the host will example good behavior like welcoming guests by their name and listening to every response with an open mind. In gist, a
SAME WORDS DIFFERENT PEOPLE!
Interpretation...
This morning, I had a discussion about some definitions of particular set of words. It is absolutely amazing ow people can see and or interpret different meaning from the same exact word. It really makes me think the way everyone perceives things one a day to day basis. Anywho, during the discuissin came to new components in my knowledge. Firstly, the word viral does not mean just the rapid spread of a source on the internet. The term also refers to anything associated with a virus. So, simple but yet that did not cross my mind when reading the word viral. But, that does not mean someone else did not come up with another distinct definition and or meaning. Secondly, there was the word meme. My companion, said the word meant a funny image and or video spread throughout the web. However, I interpreted that it was an image or video to catch the attention of an internet user to understand a certain topic and or event that is typically relatable. Same word. Different interpretations once again. In gist, I learned that there are many different definitions and or meanings to words that we can't see. Therefore, talk about words and what you think they mean with other people! You might learn a thing or two!

THE VALUE OF MY TIME!
Helpful?
Currently, I use a significant portion of my time to invest in my goal to becoming a lawyer. Now, this consists of many things. For example, I sell a lot of my time on school, whether I am doing homework, in class, working on a project, studying, ect. . This helps me by making sure I have the academics and education needed to attend the university that will provide me my degrees to pursue my career. Next, I spend a significant amount of time on my sport. for the reason, that it enables me to excel at the sport that may result in a athletic scholarship that will aide my preferred profession. Also, I give a good amount of time interacting with friends and family this keeps human I guess I should say. Instead of focusing primarily on school or athletics I like to be with people that serve as y support system to keep me moving an motivated. Finally, I pass time to put my mental state at ease and or peace. In other words, to escape the threatening tight grasp of work and school and high demand of success, relaxing is a major ust. This helps me stay alive! so, simple but yet a necessity to keep moving forward to my goal because it relieves any stress or worry I feel constantly. All in all, I contribute a lot to my goal andor dream in terms of time but, there are moments of time that I simply take a breather however, it still helps pave the way to my goal.
