NOTES FROM TODAY'S LECTURE!

Breaking it Down...

  • Logical fallacy: an error in reasoning that renders an argument invalid.
  •  Diction and Syntax=poetic words
  •  Logos (logical reasoning of an argument) -allusions to Lincoln and Shakespeare "summer of our discontent" Shakespearean quote (allusion to Steinbeck) shows that MLK was well aware of literature and the origins
  •  Theme=of speech had to do with the idea that our society is based on a constitution and a lot of rules written on paper (based on religious ethic etc.) yet America hasn't been clearly portraying the famous quote "Everyone is created equally."
  •   Ethos (author's credibility) -MLK was a man of color so he's faced ridicule and suffering -He was a church leader and a man of God which gave him credibility to speaking in front of an audience with credible biblical references
  • Pathos (emotional connection/passion of an argument) -the screams and the shouts of the audience showed how touching MLK's speech was to them
