LITERATURE ANALYSIS #2: WHERE SHE WENT

Plot:

Gayle Forman’s young adult novel, Where She Went, is the sequel to , If I Stay,  Adam Wilde a main character in the first novel is telling the story firsthand. In the first novel, it ends with the protagonist Mia hall, is left in a coma barley awakened. Therefore comes the sequel, in the beginning Adam’s band "Shooting Star" is one of the biggest rock bands in the world at the time. However, on the eve of their new tour, Adam, the star of the group, is overcome with dread due to his breakup with Mia. Wilde uses drugs and alcohol to live his days in daze to try and forget his greatest torment of being left by Mia Hall, his ex-girlfriend. As, Adam never knew the reason why Mia had chose to leave him. Mia, now a  professional musician. is performing at a venue in the New York, where Adam just so happens to be at due to his tour. Although, Adam tries to hide in the crowd of the show, he is noticed by Mia. As a result, the pair spend their night roaming Manhattan despite the man questions surrounding their departure. Finally, Mia reveals her reason for leaving Adam. As the novel ends, Mia and Adam and they reconcile their romance despite the many obstacles and challenges they face.

 Theme:

This novel carries many themes such as sacrifice, loss, family, and closure. But, there is one theme that captures the essence of it all which is the aftermath of grief is unpredictable and excruciatingly difficult. Many people have gone through this exact stage but, some have not therefore, this theme will hit your emotions greatly and quite unexpectedly.

Author's Morning:

After analyzing the text, I have to the conclusion of the author's morning routine. First, the author will wake up in pure sorrow and or negativity. For the reason, that the author is able to convey true grief and resentment that the author themselves must experienced it firsthand. After waking up, agaozing the author drags themselves out of bed with their pounding headache. Perhaps hungover from the night before. As she makes her way to the kitchen, she  sits down on her singled out chair on the table. After, they close their eyes and give themselves a pep talk to get them ready to prepare for another day. In the novel, the author wrote, "..I find the need to remind myself of the temporariness of the day, to reassure myself that I got through yesterday, I'll get through today", (Forman pg. 3). This piece in the introduction gave me the sense of needing a reminder to live day by day as the text seems to give off that the character (author) wants to give up or simply disappear. After, they will prepare coffee. Black coffee, extremely bitter. I came to this because of this text, "Yeah, well, I'm a little over secrets. Do you mind telling me where we're going. Is that too much to fuck-ing ask?', (Forman pg. 143-144). I mean you can just feel the bitterness of the words. So, bitter tone equals bitter coffee. After, the coffee comes the trip to the restroom. Bitter coffee simply does not mix well with last night's liquor. As their stomach is empty,  pure acid and weird taste of liquor comes out. The author was able to describe and wrote, the life of an alcoholic with pure ease and it was not no typical "drunk" loser vibe. For example, "I light a cigarette and hope that will steady me enough to walk back to the hotel where I'll call Aldous and get everything straightened out and maybe even sleep a few hours", (Forman pg.69). This is showing simplicity and  "normal" average day of drinking till you hit the daze stage of it all. Furthermore, the author will send the rest of their morning drowned in their thoughts sitting over the toilet. In conclusion, the author writes the stages of grief so intensively that I can feel it myself as I read therefore, I think they went through some event that thesithor themselves had experienced some sorrow and grief that inspired them to write such a meaningful piece that it needed not one book but, a sequel.

Literary Techniques

The author used several literary devices that allowed me to define and express the theme with almost eas. To start off, the use of metaphors. Like,"These days you gotta milk a dollar out of every dime," (Forman pg.4). This is showing you need to get all that you can out of something in other words, mak the best of what you got. Therefore, I can see this as stage of grief where you start to realize acceptance but, have still a negative vibe. Next, there is another metaphor, "Whenever I remember it,  I just picture our tent, a little ship glowing in the night", 9Forman pg.175). The illustration of the tent to a glowing ship at sea established that the feeling and or memory of happiness is still present that the character didn't know was still there. As a result, grief is unpredictable. Now, there onomatopoeia, "Rumors were that your band broke up. And then comes Collateral Damage. And pow," (Forman pg. 14). This allowed me to see what Adam's feelings were during his stage ofgriefas reflected in the song title stated and the interviewer's diction.
