FINAL REFLECTION FOR AMERICAN LITERATURE 2019-2020!

Time flew by...

1. I still remember this like it was just yesterday. I remember waking into the classroom and I already I knew it was going to be different. The desks we arranged in a sort of Socratic manner it was quite interesting. The next thing that really took me by surprise was when I students were given the couch use to decide how we wanted the course to be taught but was great to finally have a voice in what happens in my education. In other classes, I don’t.
 2. Looking back, I feel that the most meaningful things was the pieces of literature we’ve read together. Every poem, essay, book, and short story. All of them carried a deeper message. This works gave me meaningful lessons that changed my life. Especially, the Emerson essay. In other words, you shared this amazing lives of text with us to give us these new insights that quite frankly changed ost our views and lives even.
 3. I am most proud of my big question, I feel that in my preparation and research I had learned many things. Although, I did not get to finish it I still  proud of the amount of work and time I put into to it. It was a tough subject to attack but, I tackled it head on. And I have no regrets.
 4. I wish I could’ve realized how much easier it is to write an essay when you simply let your mind instead of worrying about the structure. I can visibly see now the difference in the way I write when I simply let my mind run free. It’s quite amazing to see actually.
5. This course has taught me many things. But, I think the most significant thing  it taught me was to simply try and be your own person. Nowadays, those simple taps seem nothing near easy. So, knowing this in the further I feel my work in literature will be much more emotional and less forced.
 6. I chose to have a letter grade. And I feel I deserve an “A”. For the reason, that I continued working on posts and reading books during this crazy pandemic. I followed the requirement givens to  get the free easy “A”. And lastly, I participated in providing my writing to our book in the works, “Surviving with Class”.

If school opened up tomorrow. I feel that I would want to go. My heart is saying yes but my head is saying no. We cannot know for sure that all Santa Maria High School staff and thousands of students are safe to be around other people. You never know. So, no I would not go back school. Trust me I really do want to trust that my fellow classmates and I will be safe but there’s no guarantee. No reassurance of our safety.

If I am being quite honest I am not a sandwich person. I am a picky eater after all. I know, tragic. There is really only one sand which I eat. And to me it’s the best thing in the world. Especially, after weigh ins at tournament. A simple peanut butter sandwich. Yes, no jelly just peanut butter. I’m weird but, I’m pretty sure this has been established beforehand. I mean there is not much to go in detail in about this sand which so let’s talk about it’s memory to me. The sand which was my favorite to eat for lunch or at anytime really. It holds a special place in my childhood.

Something good about this pandemic. For one the planet in terms of nature and environmental factors seem to be thriving during this pandemic. As the lack of humans destroying its atmosphere with trash is helping significantly. And plus, in quarantine people are able to spend a lot more time with family and some greatly appreciate this. It’s hard to find the positive things during this pandemic as the whole pandemic has brought upon many negative factors. However, it is significant for us to stay positive and to keep a good mindset as that is all we need to make it through these hard times.

May 12, 2020

Stress. Stuck in waiting has taken a toll on my education greatly. I am expected to learn calculus and physics through a screen as if it the subjects aren’t already hard enough. Of course, we have our teachers present through a screen but it just isn’t the same. I feel lost in this pandemic. As many do feel. But, I will continue moving forward it’s not like I can rewind. AP exams are coming which means time to study. Another load to put in myself. Hopefully, next week will be easier.

May 13, 2020

Time taking its time is the absolute worse. As is it the day will never end. I tend to feel this a lot in my physics class it completely bores me despite its difficulty I find the topic boring.  Each time we are taking notes in class or watching a video I swear the clock hands start to move in slow motion instead ticking off at each second it ticking for each millisecond. Don’t get me wrong the teacher is nice and all but science and math are just not my thing and physics seems to be both mixed in one. Tragic.

May 14, 2020

Who do I trust? I trust everyone until proven otherwise. It is simply unwise to say we do not trust people we do not know.  It’s true you do not know so how could you possibly know whether or not they are trustworthy. I trust my family and friends as do all. I trust my classmates. My colleagues. My teachers. As I said before I trust everyone. Maybe that’s a bad thing but it’s the way I live my life. As the saying goes innocent until proven guilty right?

Catch-22!

Mind Games...

Today my colleagues and I have learned what the Catch-22 is in the novel, Catch-22. In my perspective, it was you’re crazy if you want to fly missions and you don’t want to fly missions than you’re not crazy which means you have to fly missions. Therefore, deposits whether you’re crazy or not you will be stuck flying missions. That’s the catch. It’s a trap really.

Everyone at this point knows about the corona virus from children to adults. You’d have to be living under a literal rock to not know anything about. But, what about if someone was in a coma and had no awareness of this virus. I feel this pandemic is quite hard to explain. For it is very complex. But, I’m gonna try. In China there was a outbreak of an illness that was killing numbers of children, adults around 45-up, small children, and the people with a weak immune system. Due, to several tourists and other people continuing to travel the world this virus began to spread heavily and quickly. As the virus is air-borne. To take action, we are in a quarantine where we must stay inside most of the day and only if leave for necessities or work. We must also stay six feet apart from another if we are outside with people. Masks are a must now. There’s no toilet paper. No hand sanitizer. All this type of products. Now, we are watching the number of cases rise and fall waiting to see what happens next.

Cinco de Mayo is the day where Mexico defeated France at the battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican war. Many people think that this day signifies Mexican Independence Day but it’s not. It really just celebrates a turning point battle. That would eventually lead to their independence.  Latinos celebrate this day with pride in their country. They show this with cookouts and parties and most importantly gifts. This day is pretty simple to explains it really isn’t anything bigger than a battle won.

Biggest opportunity. Right now? First thing that comes to mind is wrestling in college.  I am currently. Getting offers from collegiate wrestling programs. I will take advantage of these offers. For now, I am emailing coaches back and forth deeply looking into their academics and scholarship benefits.  I even had a couple zoom meetings with some coaches. It’s an exciting thing to think about really. I love wrestling and to continue it beyond high school sounds like a dream come true. Anyways, I will chase down this opportunity until I reach the finish line. Whatever, the finish line will be.  This is great opportunity and I won’t let it slip away.

Cracking my knuckles. It’s a hardcore of habit of mine. I’m not really sure what age I was when I started it. But, I can’t think of a day when I didn’t. Everyday when I wake I crack my neck, knuckles, basically everything. Then, in class I crack my knuckles. And during practice. At least for, when I crack my knuckles it’s out of pure habit. There’s no particular reason for it. I just do it. It’s part of my routine at this point. However, not everyone is the same way. I know some people crack their knuckles out of nerves or anxiety. It gives them a calming relief.  And I know some people crack their knuckles just to hear the sound. Or perhaps someone will crack their knuckles just to freak some people out. There is always one person who is simply appalled by the act. Cracking knuckles is a normality at this point. Well, for me at least.

April 28, 2020

A book. About life in quarantine. Sounds interesting enough. If it were to be about my life it would entitle it, “No Distractions”. For the reason, that we our literally quarantined with our thoughts. With our demons we try so hard to distract ourselves. But, we can leave the seclusion we find ourselves. Therefore, no distractions. For me at least. I need distractions. I am an overt thinker. I like to create imaginary scenarios where my life crumbles apart due to small mistakes. Maybe I’m a perfectionist. It’s kind of in my nature. I’m stuck in a room with my demons. People say face them but, I’d rather not. I want distractions.

April 29, 2020

Choices. We make them everyday. Sometimes without realizing so. Today I made choices. I am going to workout two times. One for the morning. Second in the night. Best way to start and end the day. For me. I am gonna go to all my online classes or try to at least. I am gonna work on my assignment for my history class. I will reread one of my favorite books. I make these choices to help me. When I workout I ensure that the body I worked three years to get won’t go away in weeks. Also, I need to be in shape for my sport there’s no time to start from scratch. As for all the class stuff. I do that just to become successful in this world you need high letter grades to show your success and capability. No need to go on there right. As for reading, I want to read for fun. I feel with school I’m losing my love for reading just because I am lately being forced to read for knowledge gain rather than the purity of learning themes and other key lessons to be learned from books.

April 30, 2020

Exact moment.  Right now. I am ecstatic. I was on my NCSA profile which is a program that helps student athletes get in touch with Universities offering spots on their roster for a particular sport. I am overjoyed to learn I got a third offer of a full ride scholarship for wrestling. It feels like a dream. I love the idea of having options to get to choose where I want to wrestle. All my hard work and dedication I put into my sport has got me to this very moment. And I couldn’t be any happier.

May 1, 2020

Donald Trump. Not the most favorable person. Obviously. I do not think I would be able to in the same room as that man. It wouldn’t particularly be a a pretty scene. Anyways, let’s say I can keep my cool. What would I say to this man. For one, I would ask him if he is thinking of taking a different approach for the whole pandemic.  As the numbers of cases is the U.S. are reaching new points everyday. In addition, I would ask why he is keeping people cramped together in literal cages during this pandemic. I mean it’s saddening to know about these immigration camps. But, imagine how they’re feeling while being in a pandemic. Their fear. I don’t even want to think about it more. Moving on, I would also like to know how is our country doing economically  after all these relief  checks and unemployment checks. Our country is well-known for our reoccurring economic downfall. Will it happen again? Who knows user this president anything can happen for the most part. The dude has no limits.

Fahrenheit 451 Essay!

Burning through the Layers

High School. You either love it or hate it. Or perhaps you have the good o'l love hate relationship. Typically, students source the reason for their dread of high school to be the daunting number of assignments. In most cases, this is all too true. Although, the profound stereotypical assignment always portrayed to be the worse are and always will be an essay. So, here I am tackling the "impossible" assignment:
Have you ever looked at your reflection? I assume the answer is yes. And if it's not then. that is shocking. Everyday we take a look in the mirror whether its when we awake in the morning, get ready for particular event, or simply out of boredom.  But, I am not trying to highlight the part of looking at your features in the mirror. I am more or so asking what do you see in the mirror. What defines you?  Everyday we struggle with finding our identity. Do we genuinely know who we are. Its a difficult question if you ask me. However, addressing this question head on can lead to outcomes you never imagined possible. As seen in a certain novel. Fahrenheit 451, written beautifully by Ray Bradbury. If you have ever read any works by Bradbury that yo  already know whats in store. But, if not do not fear I will guide you through the experience.  In short, the plot revolves around a man named,Guy Montag. Montag resides in a dystopian society where books are outlawed as a result having "firemen" burn any that are found. Montag is one of those "firemen". The most common themes expressed on this novel is censorship or ignorance as a whole. But,I see this novel differently. And it all because of one damn metaphor about a mirror.
Bradbury is known for predicting future conflicts we now face in today's society. And believe me he did not fail with this novel. In my perspective, the novel reflects the struggling of finding one's self identity or the difficulty of the topic of self identification alone. The author reveals this by using symbolism, mirrors, and the simply the character's journey as a whole.
Hands. We never really think twice about them. I mean they're just there. A part of our body. But, not in this book. The hands are so much more. Now, there are many times we are brought back into the topic of hands in this book. And each time we learn something meaningful. For once, we are given a situation where the protagonists a character his boss to be more specific. This event was illustrated as, "He twitched the safety catch on the flame thrower. Beatty glanced instantly at Montag’s fingers and his eyes widened the faintest bit. Montag saw the surprise there and himself glanced to his hands to see what new thing they had done. Thinking back later he could never decide whether the hands or Beatty’s reaction to the hands gave him the final push toward murder,”. I know what you're thinking. Despite the actual murder present there is a hidden message. As Beatty the person who is murdered by Montag is portrayed to be fork in the road preventing Montag from truly finding his true self. This event represents the frustration one feels to find our true selves. We crave it. We want it. Therefore, after time of struggling sometimes we act out letting our hands takeover. And that is what happened here for Montag his hands took over. In addition, during a conversation, a character named, Granger, begins to talk about his grandfather who has passed. He describes him as sculptor who carved wood, he helped clean up the slums, he raised doves and pigeons, he told jokes, and he played the violin. His actions in  life made such an impact on the world and on Granger. Therefore, this is connecting to our hands by representing our actions. It is being implied that our actions are what is remembered when we our gone And it's quite beautiful actually. But, so terrifying at the same time. This brings up the question: who are we to the world? Who are we really? It really gets us thinking about what legacy will we leave behind will it be genuine or will it just be a hoax of a personality we painted to please others. And that's the scary part. In the end, the use of hands in this novel implicitly illustrates the significance of finding self identity despite the hardships that will come along doing so.
At last the mirror. Now, the metaphor I mentioned. Close the end of the novel, Fahrenheit 451, a character named Granger speaks of finally burying the war and putting it in the past.  Firstly, he says they would begin with a mirror company. The purpose of this is for the people of the society to truly look at themselves. This helps people realize their flaws and or mistakes. This is metaphor referring for people to reflect on themselves to genuinely analyze their life and even purpose in general. This is always the first step or major step in the process of fixing an issue. Therefore, that's where the significance of this representation of a mirror brings.  Take a good look in the mirror. They always say. Do you see-your true self? What is our true selves? But, it is a first step. To a long journey. Furthermore, this ideology is presented when the city is being bombed and Montag's thoughts go to picturing his wife, Mildred, dying in a hotel room, "Montag, falling flat, going down, saw or felt, or imagined he saw or felt the walls go dark in Millie’s face, heard her screaming, because in the millionth part of time left, she saw her own face reflected there, in a mirror instead of a crystal ball, and it was such a wildly empty face, all by itself in the room, touching nothing, starved and eating of itself, that at last she recognized it as her own". This quote reveals how Mildred's  death will function like a mirror that will allow her see her true self for the first time in her life. It will revealed how empty and or vain her life has been with no time to change it. Fortunately, has learned the importance of self-reflection and self-understanding before it was too late.
Now, for the journey. It is no secret that Guy Montag is a dynamic character.  The character goes from a good citizen in society to a rebel, from numb to actually feeling emotions, and finally from conversing bluntly to actually have thoughts and mindfulness in the conversation. At first, Montag is a great fireman in his dark society, he burns the books as he is supposed to and he enjoys this is seen right of the bat in the novel, “ It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed”. We can explicitly see how Montag find satisfaction in burning the books as it is his job.  However, this changes. We can see the change when his rebellious side comes forth. Guy begins to hide books, he starts a stash at his house. Not only that but he seeks help from another character to help him read a book so, he ends up getting an earpiece where a character named, Faber, reads to him. . Therefore, it is clear that a change occurred Montag went from the rule enforcer to the rule breaker. . Secondly, in their first interaction Clarisse asks Montag if he is happy without thought he assumes his answer is yes however, once he actually processes the question he begins to see he is not as his life had been always numb and gray. Then, we can see this drastic emotion change when Montag explains to Faber what he is seeking from reading books and discussing them with others. He expresses his frustration with the way technology has taken over their lives: The televisions in the walls do all the talking while the people don’t talk to each other. This lack of human connection contributes to the unhappiness he realizes he’s been feeling, which is why he begins looking for something with greater meaning. We can see that Montag is yearning for new emotion he wants he feels the first ration for once his emotion is strongly represented and it was not before. Thirdly, Montag at first was a terrible person to have a conversation with his answers were always quick and short as seen in his first interaction with Clarisse. In other words, he answered without thought: quick and efficient like, a robot almost. However, as Montag encounters the wanderers sitting by the fire they hold a deep meaningful conversation you can see how Montag actually took his time to find the right reply and words to these people which I think is the best change of all. In conclusion, Montag goes through an evolution  as many protagonists but, unlike the others he finds humanity in this robotic society he lives in which I think is simply beautiful. Guy Montag achieved the impossible he found his true identity.
Nowadays, difficulty is promoted greatly. But, does it actually occur? With so many new technological innovations like social media and more we can't help but copy. We follow the trend its just in our nature to do so. We want to fit in. No one really wants to stand out So, do we truly break out of  given stereotypes? I know in the constitution it states,"We are all equal...", but that does not mean we have all equal the same personality. I hope we all can go through finding our identity just like Montag. It will be hard. But, hey let's take the first step. Take a look the mirror and break through the layer of facades you put over yourself.

I KNOW THIS GUY!

New Experience.

Everyday we read things written by someone right? But, it’s not everyday we get read something written by someone we know. Unless, you’re an English teacher then it’s part of your job to do exactly that. Anyways, recently I got the opportunity to read an essay written by someone I know.  It is crazy how you can see someone’s personality play out in writing. It really is something amazing to see. As I kept, reading I was right of the bat intrigued. The “introduction” was so captivating and flowed nicely. Now, I put quotes on introduction because it did not feel like a usual introduction. It was relatable and friendly. Almost comforting if I may say. The essay was never boring. And if I’m honest I did not feel like I was reading an essay. It felt like I was having an insightful conversation with the author. As the author, contumely always referred back to the reader in some way never leaving them out. It was quite the experience. So, to the author: thank you.

J.E.:4/20-4/24

April 20, 2020

Although, I wish my personality was the same as it was when I was a child but, no it’s not. As I child, as many people were I was carefree, energetic, just slays living in my moment. As they was never moments for me to worry. Now, what caused me to change? A moment where I knew I changed. That’s a tough question my mind isn’t really allowing me to go back that many years. I do not know the exact moment I changed. We just grow up without really realizing it. But, a moment in my mind keeps coming up in my head. However, it did not particularly occur during my childhood directly. It was more like a couple years back. As I was doing a project for an English class I looked through many paintings by famous artists. Our objective was to find a painting and write the background of the painting from what people analyzed about the artist. As I came upon several paintings, I found myself sticking to works by Vincent Van Gough. As I looked deeper into his background. I was revealed to the true meaning behind his paintings. Behind the bright colors and beautiful scenic paints was his great ideal of pain he used his pain as a igniter to create this beautiful piece of art. That is the moment I realized we usually just admire paintings without trying to figure out what inspired them or how the artists truly felt and we miss some great learning opportunities. From that day, I changed. This can be connected to the novel, “Fahrenheit 451”, as the main character as well felt he had miss so many learning opportunities from ignoring books. So, it is important to analyze. It is always beneficial.

April 21, 2020

Every action physical action we do is made by our hands. Now, what wonderful things I can do with my hands. Well, there are many things. For one, I can write.  I can grab a pencil or type on a computer or text on phone. All these ways to express my own thoughts. I can express my emotions or passions all because my hands let me. This lets people into my mind into my brain really. Most appreciate this.  My hands let me play the piano. Music is a beautiful thing really. As any dull day comes I simply play the notes on the keys letting all my worries fade away. And for the sound well friends and family seem to enjoy it. As a wrestler, my hands no many motions and techniques. Coaches appreciate this. Scouts appreciate this. However, my opponents not so much. There are many things we can do with our hands. We can cause good or we can cause bad. It’s a 50/50 chance here. So, choose wisely what you do with your hands.

April 22, 2020

Grandfather. Oh, Granger’s sweet grandfather. While, reading my peers and so come upon this character describing the memory he had of his grandfather. It quite beautiful really. He described as a sculptor who did good with his hands like make toys and other objects that made people happy. This moment in the book really helps us readers realize how our actions is what is remembered. Our actions create our legacy.  And that is pretty significant if you really take time to process that. It really makes me think? What am I known for? Do I do good with my actions? Do I do bad? An I even worthy of being memorable? I cannot answer that question. I guess time will tell won’t it. Anyways, knowing this has caused me be more insightful about the actions I make even the smallest gesture such as a smile or some sign of acknowledgement to others. I feel I want to make an impression to be memorable. In the end, doesn’t everyone want to leave their mark on the world.

April 23, 2020

The world. It is many things. It is beautiful. Scary. Terrible. Dying. In simple words the world is confusing. It continuously continues to evolve as life itself begun to end and appear. The world is out home but, yet we neglect it. We claim to love the beauty of the oceans and forests but, we ruin them by putting skyscrapers. And do not even get me started on climate change. I guess what I’m trying to say is people have made the world hard to understand. There are so many different opinions and perspectives of the world that one cannot simply know how to correctly define the world. So, I guess that’s what makes the world curious. The inability to accurately describe it. Crazy isn’t? I’ve lived in this world for sixteen years and cannot find a way to genuinely define it. Curious.

April 24, 2020

Peter Pan. That’s the story that’s popped into my head today. I’ve read numerous novels on this story. I’ve watched all the moves. I’ve read all the essays, articles, etc. I guess you can say I’m a Peter Pan expert. As a child, this movie was one of my favorites. I was simply intrigued by the idea of Neverland a place where you can have fun. But, my whole perspective of this story changed as a I got older. I took this story in more carefully and deeply. When Pan, says he never wants to grow up I tend to relate to him greatly. Not growing up. At least to me sounds fun. The pressure of the world can be much sometimes especially during a pandemic. Therefore, I think that is why this story had popped into my mind. Oh, and key tip the background and origin story for Peter Pan is extremely dark and I love everything about it. It is so captivating and bone-chilling. What’s there not like. Anyways, back to never growing up this world has showed me that as I was younger life seems simply better. That’s it.  Life is hard. But, hey “that’s life right?”

MIRROR MIRROR!

Reflection...

Close the end of the novel, Fahrenheit 451, a character named Grater speaks of finally burying the war and putting it in the past. IT’S COMPLICATED!

Emotions are confusing...
Near the end of the the novel, Fahrenheit 451, the protagonist watches the city he lived in blow up into pieces. You would think that Montag would feel sad.  But, he does not know particularly what he feels. Maybe he is sad that his wife is stuck in the middle of the disaster. Or maybe he is happy that the society he has grown to hate has been destroyed. Maybe he is just simply confused. He does not know. As said above, emotions are a tricky situation. At times, we do not know how we feel. In my view, at first Montag’s reaction was hard to understand but as my peers and I continued to break down the scene I found myself relating to the character all to well. Especially, in this time stuck in the house quarantined during this pandemic. I still don’t know how I feel about it. I am happy to be home to finally be able to relax from my usually busy schedule. I am sad that I am away from close friends and peers of my mine. I am stressed for my grades. I am scared for family members.  I feel may things. I am confused. Like, Montag I do not know how to feel or what I genuinely feel. And that’s okay. It’s okay to not how to feel in some situations.

As I was further into the reading of the novel, Fahrenheit 451, one description caught my eye. During a conversation, a character named, Granger, begins to talk about his grandfather who has passed. He describes him as sculptor who carved wood, he helped clean up the slums, he raised doves and pigeons, he told jokes, and he played the violin. His actions in  life made such an impact on the world and on Granger. Therefore, this is connecting to our hands by representing our actions. It is being implied that our actions are what is remembered when we our gone. This connects to all people in the world. As for Granger, it helped him grieve over his grandfather and give him insight on how to live life. And for Montag it really opened his eyes to the damage he has caused to the world by burning books. Montag realizes all the actions he has done ae negative. Which stings a bit. So, in the end take time to make your mark on the world really think about it. Your legacy is what is remembered.

AS WE GROW WE CHANGE!

Evolution.

Dynamic. In definition, the word means a constant change or in the process of change. In gist, the keyword is change. So, a what makes a dynamic character? Simple, change. A dynamism character goes through a series of changes. Unlike, static characters who remain the same throughout the novel.   Now, in the book, Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury’s brightest dynamic character is, Guy Montag. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed”, (1). We can explicitly see how Montag find satisfaction in burning the books as it is his job.  However, this changes. We can see the change when his rebellious side comes forth. Guy begins to hide books, he starts a stash at his house. Not only that but he seeks help from another character to help him read a book so, he ends up getting an earpiece where a character named, Faber, reads to him. . Therefore, it is clear that a change occurred Montag went from the rule enforcer to the rule breaker. . Secondly, in their first interaction Clarisse asks Mo tag if he is happy without thought he assumes his answer is yes however, once he actually processes the question he begins to see he is not as his life had been always numb and gray. However, as Montag encounters the wanderers sitting by the fire they hold a deep meaningful conversation you can see how Montag actually took his time to find the right reply and words to these people which I think is the behest change of all. In conclusion, Montag goes through an evolution  as many protagonists but, unlike the others he finds humanity in this robotic society he lives in which I think is simply beautiful.

451 QUESTIONS! 20 ANSWERS!

Here we go!

  1. “The Hearth and the Salamander” seems an odd choice for a chapter title. Why do you suppose Bradbury chose it? What connections did he want to create? (hint: in mythology, the salamander is a fire lizard, said to be capable of starting and putting out fires)                    -This uniquely named chapter was name as it is I think to foreshadow its theme the "Salamander represents Guy, a fireman, however, he is no normal fireman he starts fires. In homes specifically (the hearths). Furthermore, when Guy goes into the homes to burn the books which I feel the books are a way to reveal humanity and feeling of insight. This expresses the the theme of how the humanity and individualism in society is burning away.
  2. The lines, “It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed” (1) tell the reader a great deal about the protagonist, Guy Montag. What assumptions can the reader make?                                                                        -Guy Montag, he is fireman, that starts the fires instead of putting them out. He goes into houses and burns books. He is unhappy. But, he is misunderstood. However, after reading the lines above numerous negative assumptions could be made about Montag. Readers can infer he is evil, heartless, unimaginative, cruel, and simply vile. Like, literally who can enjoy seeing something burn. It is a very unusual trait.
  3.  Bradbury’s use of metaphor and animal imagery begins on page one of the novel. He writes, “With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head...” (1). Why would he have chosen to characterize a fire hose as a “great python?” Is the imagery positive or negative?                                                                                                                                              -Bradbury chooses the "Great Python" to symbolize he fire because pythons spit out venom or in the case of the fire kerosene. This is an extremely negative imagery as the "venom" in any case is a bad trait as it typically leads to deadly harm in some way.
  4. Also on the first page, we learn that Montag’s fire-helmet is inscribed with the number 451. What is the symbolic importance of this number?                                                                 -The significance behind this number is that this number is the exact temperature where book-paper burns. Therefore, showing the temperature at which Guy uses to burn the books.
  5. Explain how Clarisse McClellan is first described. What is it about her that immediately strikes Montag?                                                                                                                                  -Clarisse is initially described as an "out of place" kind of girl she stands out in the society written in the novel. Guy is intrigued by her outgoing personality and "confusing" outlook on life.
  6. The names “Clarisse” and “Guy” are significant. How?                                                               -The name Clarisse is important because its origin word means clear and she clearly states what on her mind and her mind is untouched by this inhumane society. As for Guy, it means
  7. Clarisse questions Montag about his way of life. How does she question him, and how does he react to her questions?
  8. During the first conversation between Clarisse and Montag the reader discovers several odd things about the society in which these two characters live. Describe at least three odd things we learn.
  9.  Montag employs two similes in thinking of Clarisse. What comparisons does he make and why?
  10. What does Montag realize about himself after Clarisse leaves him the first time?
  11. What are “Seashells” and how does Montag’s wife, Mildred/Millie, use them?
  12. There is a stark difference between Bradbury’s first description of Clarisse and his first description of Mildred. What does the reference to her face (11) signify and how does it contribute to our understanding of both her character and the marriage between Montag and Mildred?
  13. Describe the machine used on Mildred. Explain the symbolism.
  14.  Montag’s comment that “Nobody knows anyone” (14) is telling. What is the epiphany he has?
  15. Unthinkingly, Montage finds himself drawn to the window of the McClellan household. Explain the contrast between his house and this one. What does the contrast tell the reader about society at large?
  16. Montag’s confused statement, “‘I don’t know anything anymore’” (15) signifies a pivotal moment in the text. Explain.
  17. When Mildred wakes up from her near-death experience, she does not seem to remember what happened. Describe her mood at this point. Why has Bradbury characterized her this way? What does Millie’s conversation with Montag reveal about her?
  18. Why does Clarisse visit the psychiatrist?
  19.  What is “the Hound” and what is its function? Why is Montag bothered by the Hound?
  20.  Why does the woman want to stay-- and burn, and die--with her books, rather than surrender to the fireman and leave the books and her home to burn?

TOGETHER WE STAND in our living rooms....

Isolation.

Isolated. We all our isolated from the outside world. I miss everyone. I miss everything. I hate being stuck here at home. Stuck with my thoughts and no one to distract me from them. Technology has hated me these past few weeks but, now it is getting better. As of now, I have no time for my reading of random novels or short stories I find on the internet as I have this crazy new schedule if you can even call it that. All these teachers pulling and tugging me every which way. I feel stuck. And unmotivated. But, I feel better now. With this time, I have began to learn more about my big question and fund even more evidence for it. On Instagram, snap-chat, or any other form of social media students are posting how they are relieved to be out of school away from the stress just for a little bit. However, some students are begging to hate these online courses saying it is harder than normal day to day class. In the end, isolation makes me feel horrible but, it helps knowing other people are experiencing it as well and maybe in a positive way which makes me feel happy.

Future. I think college. Family. Marriage. Wrestling. Age. Numerous images are appearing through my mind right now. In my future, I think of my profession will it be a lawyer? Will I be successful? Will I even go to the college I strive for? The future is uncertain . We do not know what it is n store for us. We simply map it out hoping for the best. Which is pretty crazy if you ask me.

March 20, 2020

First off, a lot of twenties in the date today. Cool! Okay, moving on. spring. Typically, everyone loves it. The flowers are blooming the sun is shining. Simply beautiful season. But, what this season represents for me is training. Spring is the time I began immense training for my sport. As April begins to approach I start my working out.

Online Meeting #1 (Notes)

Fahrenheit 451..First Impression

  • Book cover=amazing
  • Outstanding imagery for the description of burning
  • "Fireman"= Character (Guy Montag)
  • Clarisse McClellan
  • Totally opposite personalities→thoughtful and non-thoughtful
Bradbury never fails to amaze me. He opens up the novel with this beautiful imagery for his character. As the two characters are introduced they seem to be polar opposites the girl is insightful and takes her time while, the man is quick to answer without thought. Awesome way to start!

Uncertainty. That word scares me. Now, whether in a good way or bad way. It really just depends on the day and or situation. Like, if something is uncertain it is undecided or not known for sure. Usually, when I don't have confirmation on a particular thing it bothers me greatly however, sometimes the word uncertainty brings me excitement and adrenaline for what is yet to come. I feel like I am in a tug a war with myself at the moment. I want to argue I hate uncertainty but, then love it. I guess its a love hate relationship we all have those. Right? Anyways uncertainty is beautiful. Uncertainty is terrifying. And your life is uncertainty. And we say life is precious. So, then uncertainty shall be named that word as well.

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH!

In Today’s World.

During this whole pandemic, we are forced into quarantine. Now, staying in your house all day may not sound too bad but, I know it will get gruesome after awhile. In terms of school, it is all moving online which I find extremely difficult. I am a person who absolutely loathes learning  online lectures especially in FaceTime. I feel as if I’m losing the optimist to listen to the teacher clearly and adequately. It just loses that learning spark for me. Therefore, when things get tough especially in today’s world I feel that I must have determination and just be able to change my routine.  I already know I am going to struggle. But, what is life without a little bit of struggle.

Journal Entry-3/16

March 16, 2020

With all honesty, I have no idea how this is going to work. Online classes? Just the sound of it brings unfamiliarity to me. But, hey its worth a shot. I am fearful that I will fall behind for the reason that my internet is not all that great. And for the love of life itself my computer hates me with a burning passion. Hopefully, everything turns out fine. All in all, I do believe these online classes could be successful but, as mentioned above it will be extremely weird. In the end, I have no more words to express I really do not know how this is going to work.

DEAR MENTOR!

In Search...

Dear Sir Ken Robinson,

My name is Destiny Garcia. I am searching for a certain individual  who is willing  to serve as a guide through the study and obstacles I may face in order to find the answer to my big question in regards to the this society
Now,  my question is: why are high school students today, under the obligation to study all subjects despite the fact that they are irrelevant to their desired major/profession? For example, I strive to be a lawyer? So, what is the purpose of me taking calculus and physics. Will these subjects help me succeed in my career choice? In other words, I find it unnecessary to study all academic subjects in high school. In my view, the current school system enforced right now treats us students like caged animals. "You must take this, this, and that in order to graduate!", we all heard that before.
This school system forces us to take classes we may not be very successful in which "cages" our overall intelligence and creativity most of the time. Therefore, I do not like and or agree with our school system of today. Therefore,  I need someone who is skilled and trained in the study of education and or learning just as you.
Furthermore, most importantly  I was in search for someone who was willing to go against the current educational system currently placed. And you did exactly that in several of your ted talks I have listened to. Fantastic! Line of reasoning, by the way. So, are you up for the challenge? If so, do not hesitate to reply.

Sincerely,
Destiny Garcia

CUE THEME MUSIC!

The Purpose Behind it All...

In my opinion the theme of, The Great Gatsby, is love can be one's downfall. Love is always seen as a great positive factor and or necessity in our lives ague to what extent is this statement true in terms of, "The Great Gatsby", is love really worth it in the end?
  1. Gatsby's love for Daisy that resulted in his death
  2. Daisy's "love" for Tom in the beginning shattered her life completely she was never truly happy
  3. Nick's relationship with Gatsby resulted in the depressive state of his life
Another, theme in mind is chasing our dreams is really not worth it or can bring negative factors in our lives. Everyone tells us to chase our dreams but in,"The Great Gatsby", that seems to fall into a negative category so, should we chase our dreams?
  1.  For Gatsby he chased his dream of being wealthy man accompanied by Daisy but, that didn't happen he died
  2.  Nick Carraway wanted to be a successful author and businessman but, that didn't happen he met Gatsby instead
  3. Daisy wished for a perfect life or a happy family if you will but, she did't her husband cheated on her and her true love died

PREVIEW OF THE ESSAY!

Rough Draft...

Ptak! Ptak! Ptak! The sound of your shoes hitting the floor below is the only sound you seem to hear. Your feet were throbbing with ache. Your pulse profusely pounding throughout your body. Your lungs burning for air. Despite this you could only think of one thing: Run…Run…Don’t stop…Keep moving…Run. The thoughts abruptly diminished. Your eyes are glued to the finish line in front of you. It's close. You could almost grasp it. Keyword almost. You never reach the finish line.
We all can be In regards to the infamous novel, The Great Gatsby, written

Ideas in mind:In terms of this text, it is shown that in the end love can be one's downfall. Whether you see this as Gatsby's failure with Daisy or Daisy's relationship with Tom. And even Nick's relationship with Gatsby. As a result, here is my prompt: Love is always seen as a great positive factor and or necessity in our lives ague to what extent is this statement true in terms of, "The Great Gatsby", is love really worth it in the end? Another prompt in my mind is the topic of hopes and dreams. Is it actually worth pursuing them. For Gatsby he chased his dream of being wealthy man accompanied by Daisy. Nick Carraway wanted to be a successful author. Daisy wished for a perfect life or a happy family if you will. So, my prompt is: Everyone tells us to chase our dreams but in,"The Great Gatsby", that seems to fall into a negative category so, should we chase our dreams?

WHAT"S SO GREAT ABOUT GATSBY!

True Colors...

One remarkable characteristic of, The Great Gatsby, is the characters. The author created these  amazing characters with so many details and personalities that were crazy. To start off, there was the man himself Jay Gatsby. Many people argue whether he was good or not. Or even great. In my view, he was great but, he wasn't perfect. No one is. This man has a great friendly personality. But,he gave this all way to a woman who wouldn't even give him the time of day let alone live her whole life with him. He was great he was self-made man. From the poor he built his wealth. He was ambitious. He was determined. But he was a fool for love. His love for a woman was the cause of his death. The love he had for a woman made him leave a woman dead on the road. Therefore, he was great but, he did have flaws. As for the infamous Nick Carraway, he describes himself as the mot honest man he has ever met.

GATSBY CHAPTER 9 NOTES AND THOUGHTS!

Resolution...

  • George Wilson was called a Mad Man because he killed someone (yet he was going through all the pain and suffering)
  • Daisy and Tom had left with a baggage and left nothing for Nick to trace them
  • No one answered back or even showed care for the fact that Gatsby was dead
  • Gatsby's father comes from a long way after seeing that his son was dead (noticed in the newspaper)
  • Both Gatsby's father and Meyer Wolfshiem consider the pattern of "Mad Man"
  • Meyer Wolfshiem mentions that he "made" Gatsby, he transformed him from rags to riches
  • Nick is at the funeral and he's reflecting on his life because of the atmosphere and emotions
  • Gatsby's schedule*
  • D not even a word
  • "After Gatsby's death the East was haunted for me like that, distorted beyond my eyes' power of correction..."-
  • JB= engaged
  • "Angry, and half in love with her, and tremendously sorry, I turned away"-NC
  • TB  saw NC (tension of releasing the truth)
  • "There was nothing I could say, except the one unutterable fact that it wasn't true-NC
  • "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.."-NC
  • G finally sees the green light but no he never gets it
  • The more we tr to change the past the more negative it will become-"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past"-NC
This chapter all the true emotions come out. Nick realizes the depths the secrets had made him go through.

GATSBY NOTES & THOUGHTS ON CHAPTER 8!

Death.

  • "I felt that I had something to tell him, something to warn him about and morning would be too late"-FORESHADOW
  • "Nothing Happened"-G
  • House= Depression festival
  • Redolent: aromatic/good smelling
  • Uniform=invisible cloak→cloaked his poorness to the rich
  • Gatsby once again, explains to Nick how madly in love he fell for Daisy even though that's not what he originally planned
  • Gatsby's servant interrupts Nick and his talk to tell him that he would drain the pool, I think that Fitzgerald to calm down the energy and include the saying about the weather and how the weather is important to this whole book so far.
  • Gatsby hasn't swam in his pool all summer, so maybe he'd like to do it at least once before tragic Autumn starts
  •  Nick gets to work and suddenly the narrative changes drastically
  •  George Wilson shot Gatsby, and then he shot himself
This chapter was all dramatic irony and ure death. The details in this book has let me with no words. No words at all.

HAVE TO VERSUS WANT TO VERSUS GET TO!

Reality.

Now, we all have our preferences on what we would like to do. It is no secret that there are differences between having to do something and wanting to do something and the point of actually getting to do something. To start off, when you must to do something it is usually something someone is requiring you to do. his usually is not favorable. But, there are some cases where this is positive.  When we say "we have to do something" it is usually someone else telling us what to do because we don't want to. Now, to want to do something is our own free will . Although, wanting to do something isn't close to getting able to do something. Furthermore, to get to do something is  an opportunity we won't normally receive and now is the chance to do so. All in all, we hate having to do something we enjoy wanting to do something and we try to get something.

WHAT GATSBY SAYS TO ME!

The Message

In terms of theme, I feel the that the theme of the infamous novel, The Great Gatsby, is simply undefinable. There are several ways to interpret what the purpose of this piece of work was created for. There is the of social classes. People's personalities. Romance. Etc. However, in my view the theme is love in the end can be one's downfall. In other words, sometimes love is not worth it. Looking into all the relationships are unhealthy and toxic.

GATSBY NOTES AND THOUGHTS: CHAPTER 6!

On and On...

  • James Gatz: Gatsby's legal name (changed @17)
  • Gatsby Background: parents were unsuccessful farmers, worked as a janitor/personal assistant, made his own success
  • JG: "Platonic conception of himself"-was imaginative about his life
  • "He was a son of God"- inventor
  • Contemptuous of women
  • Party w/ TB and JG present= TENSION
  • JG: "I know your wide" -THE IRONY
  • "She didn't have a good time"- proves Gatsby does all these parties for Daisy
  • "...she would go up to Tom and say: 'I never loved you'. After had obliterated that three sentence....she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house-just as it was five years ago"
  • "You can't repeat the past" -ouch
  • "I'm going to fix everything just the way it was before...she'll see" -The longing and even desperation
  • Beautiful descriptive details about D and JG's first kiss
-This chapter was pure background. The interviewer served as the sneaky opener to Gatsby's true past. We learn about how hard this man worked to become who he is his character is shown to be determined and creative to say the least. As for his relationship with Daisy. Is beyond measure he wants her. He needs her.

NOTES AND THOUGHTS ON GATSBY CHAPTER 5!

Moving Forward...

  • Nick= THE CONNECTOR
  • THE PLAN: Nick invites Daisy to tea then, Gatsby shows up
  • Gatsby= cares more about others feelings than his own
  • Rain= made Gatsby nervous/ spazz out
  • Gatsby is a PERFECTIONIST when it comes to Daisy
  • G is a fool when Daisy is present (like a blushing school boy)
  • "We haven't met for many years"-Daisy                                                                                           "Five years next November" -Gatsby
  • Nick find Daisy in tears in a silent conversation w/Gatsby
  • J & D: Meeting was terribly awkward but soon turns into a rekindled romance movie
  • "You always have that green light that burns all night at the end of your dock" -Gatsby
  • Nick realizes Gatsby and Daisy have forgotten that he is there →Nick leaves Gatsby and Daisy alone together.
This chapter to me was right out of a romantic movie played on a girl's night or perhaps valentines day. Here we have poor love sick Gatsby showing to be a perfectionist when it comes to the girl he longed for. Longed for. for five years to be exact. Finally, he sets up a plan to see the girl. When the meeting comes the tension is all over the room. and not the good kind of tension. Luckily, the mood fades away to the adoration felt between the two people as they felt may years ago. This chapter was basically an reveal to how deeply in love Gatsby and Daisy are as they can simply pick up right where they left off.

HOW YOU KNOW WHAT I KNOW!

The Moment of Truth...

In terms of this novel. I feel that the way I show that I know the material of this novel is through the journal topics given in the context of the book's cheaters and or events. In addition, in my posts about the notes my little interpretations or quick summaries if you will at the end of the notes show my current knowledge on that chapter. Also, we have just recently been quizzed on chapters 1-4. And I answered most of the questions with ease and deep understanding in my opinion. In the end,  I can show what I learn about what we read by posting some summaries of the book. In gist, so far in the book we've met Nick (the narrator), Gatsby, Daisy and Tom Buchanan, Myrtle (Tom's mistress) and many others that don't hold that much significance. Nick is the connector of all these characters who holds honestly while surrounded by these group of liars that hold secrets. Now, we wait to see what will happen when everybody learns about a certain secret or should I say love affair.

Minute of Mindfulness (MOM)

As I sat in my room, gazing at my wall. I begin to think about my big question. Numerous thoughts play out all at once. But, the main one that caught my attention is how will I bring this serious and contradicting opinion "big question"to big authorities or figures. I feel as though my question may be offensive for some. However, those who will not get offended may make the biggest change of all. I will save this thought for another day.

MY UN/FINISHED SYMPHONY!

In-completion...

Unfinished. Whenever I think of incomplete I think of a certain novel. It's ending almost killed me. Literally. I will never forget that book. I reread time ti time in hopes of fulfilling the hole I still feel. The book was called, The Giver. The author decided to end the plot on a cliff hanger. The last quote book still haunts me to this day. "But, perhaps it was only an echo". Lois Lowry is a brilliant writer. But, this book made me despise her from a young age. Now, my teacher id try to relive the tension my classmates and I felt after finished reading the book. She gave us an assignment to write a new ending for the novel. This is where my unfinished symphony began. I did in fact write a new ending. Then, another. And another. And so forth. Every year from that day forward I rewrite a new ending to that novel once or twice. It has become my task t find the "perfect" ending. Although, perfection is necessarily real. I feel that I will complete this symphony at some point.

WHAT'S IN MY BIG QUESTION FOR ME!

Benefits?

In terms of my big question: why have we not modernized the school system...why are students under the obligation to study all subjects even if they are irrelevant to their desired profession and or interests? It is quite clear, that the question involves me a student. Now, what is in it for me is change. Maybe the change will  happen while, I am in high school. However, maybe change will come or the future students to come. I do not want the students of our future to face what current students are feeling and facing today. So, that is what is in for me. Change for the future to come

MEET NICK!

So We Meet Again...

Recently, I've been antiquated with an old friend of mine, Nick Carraway. The Great Gatsby, is a classic. It has been awhile since I have read the novel but the narrator of the plot has never left my mind. I've began to read this novel a second time for a class. It it feels so familiar to me. Mostly, the character. The quiet, observing mature of the name quickly came into memory. Now, let me tell you about Nick. This man is very observant. Careful almost. Due, to his father warning him to be careful when criticizing or judging a person. In addition, Nick is trustworthy. Throughout the novel, Nick is told secrets but, never once does he show any interest of sharing them. Not one single hint. But, most importantly Nick is a connector. Nick in the novel seems to serve as the glue to all the characters involved he connects to all of them. Every single one. And seems to at different which each and every one of them. All in all, Nick Carraway is an alluring character which I hope everyone will get to know at some point.

DARK PATTERNS!

The Coldhearted Truth...

My fellow peers we are being fooled! I mean aren’t we always let’s be honest. Anyways, dark patterns has been revealed. In summary, there are patterns used to scam us for several things but mostly money. I began to read an article about these dark patterns which led me to trick questions. Now, we all know what trick questions are. However, the article showed how companies which place two questions of the same context to look contradicting of one another but in fact are the exact same question. It is quite difficult to put in words but it is very interring to see. In terms of my experience, trick questions come into play in my wrestling practices. Typically, the conditioning ones. For example, my coach will ask do you want two run two miles or one mile?  Obviously, the one mile was the best choice. Sadly, it wasn’t. Although, we did in fact run one mile just adding on bleachers two bleachers to be specific. In gist, we must be cautious whenever spending our money and it even investing on time on websites or stores in general.

BEHIND THE IGNITE TALKS!

The Context

As I mentioned before, a couple questions caught my eye. So, I decided to look deeper into them. And by deeper I mean ask their creators why they came up with their question. To start off, goign back to that one question about multiverses: can a multiverse be open as a frequency or energy?  Does this make time travel and guardian angels possible? I asked the person who presented question what made them ask and or even acknowledge this question. she answered that she has always found a deep interest into space and astrology.  From there she came to find the concept of multiverses and hence came the theories of time travel and guardian angels. Now, she attempted to explain the “basics” to me but, I simply could not keep up. Moving in to my next investigation, looking back at the question about knowing how to choose our careers. The student simply told me that schools and or adults just assume us students and or youth know what we want to do with our lives. And I mean he is not wrong we are usually expected to follow the paths of the older generations. All in all, the questions asked about yesterday we created upon deep interest and personal opinions and or experiences.

I'M IGNITED!

Into our Minds

Today, in class we began to explore one of long term assignments. We were asked to come up with a big question in which we will research then, teach to our fellow peers. Sadly, I missed out of the opportunity to hear my peers questions live. But, I will settle for the on screen version. Anyways, here I am looking through the list of questions and three caught y attention. The first one was is it real life or a hallucination? This made me really think about my life and all my life choices and events. This question threw me off but,in a good way. The second question was how do we know what career to choose? This is sort of related to my big question hence I took interest in it. Finally, the last question was can a multiverse be open as a frequency or energy?  Does this make time travel and guardian angels a real possibility?I have o idea what this question is asking but, I'm interested to learn about it so I can understand the concepts of the question. All in all, people have brilliant minds and we can see this from the questions asked above.

Intro Speech Draft

Practice Makes Perfect.

We all are our own person. But, yet in schools we treated as a one whole. Everyone learns the same material. Now, whether you excel or not determines your future. Like Einstein said everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree. It will live its whole life thinking its stupid. Many students today relate to that fish believing they are stupid, useless, and incapable. In this country we tolerate murder and abuse. To be more specific. The killing of individuality. The killing of creativity. And intellectual abuse. For years, we have let modern day schooling commit these crimes. Kurt Cobain once said, The duty of the youth is to challenge corruption. Therefore, I am here to find out why have we not modernized the school system? Why are students under the obligation to study all subjects even if they are irrelevant to their desired profession and or interests?
